Master Franchise vs Unit Franchise: Which Is Right for You?

By Franchise Fee · Updated October 2026

Unit franchise

A unit franchise gives you the right to run one outlet. It needs the smallest investment and suits first-time owners.

Area and master franchise

An area or multi-unit franchise gives rights to open several outlets in a region. A master franchise gives rights over a whole territory, often with the right to sub-franchise. Foreign brands commonly enter India this way; Domino's, for example, is run in India by Jubilant FoodWorks as master franchisee.

Which to choose

Master and area models need large capital, development targets and management strength. If you are new to business, start with a unit and learn the model.
